Presentation

Professor Tania Groppi is an internationally recognised scholar in comparative constitutional law. Her research has made major contributions to the understanding of constitutional adjudication, judicial comparison, and the global circulation of constitutional ideas. Throughout her career she has combined doctrinal analysis with large-scale comparative empirical research, developing innovative methodologies for studying the transnational use of constitutional jurisprudence.

She is internationally recognised for creating and leading the International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL) Interest Group on the Use of Foreign Precedents by Constitutional Judges, established in 2007. Under her scientific leadership, the network has developed the first systematic comparative research programme on the use of foreign judicial precedents by constitutional courts across more than thirty jurisdictions, culminating in the award-winning volume Judicial Bricolage: The Use of Foreign Precedents by Constitutional Judges in the 21st Century (Hart Publishing, 2025).

Her broader research agenda addresses constitutional change in a global context, including judicial dialogue, multilevel constitutionalism, democratic resilience, local democracy, sustainability, and comparative constitutional governance.

Alongside her academic activity, she has held leading advisory positions within the Council of Europe and numerous international scientific organisations, contributing to the interaction between constitutional scholarship and institutional practice.
