Presentation

Giovanna Maria Dimitri is currently a Tenure-Track Researcher (RTT) in Computer Science at the University of Milan (Statale) and Guest Lecturer in Data Science at the University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK). She was a researcher at the DIISM (RTDA), University of Siena, Italy, in the Artificial Intelligence group from February 2023 to June 2025, and previously a research fellow at DIISM and at the University of Pisa. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge (UK), under the supervision of Prof. Pietro Liò, with the thesis: “Multilayer network methodologies for brain data analysis and modeling.”

She graduated in July 2015 with an MPhil in Advanced Computer Science at the University of Cambridge, with distinction, and is a life member of Clare Hall College, University of Cambridge. She previously earned both her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees (both with full marks and honors, 110/110 cum laude) in Computer and Automation Engineering at the University of Siena (Italy), under the supervision of Prof. Michelangelo Diligenti.

She has been teaching the Business Intelligence course, a core requirement for the Master’s degree program in Management Engineering (DIISM, University of Siena), since the 2019/2020 academic year. She is an Associate Editor for the journal Neurocomputing (Elsevier) and Senior Associate Editor for the journal IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society. Her research interests mainly concern the development of deep learning and machine learning models for computer vision and bioinformatics. She is the author of over 60 papers on Artificial Intelligence topics, published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at major international conferences.

In 2013, she also earned a degree in piano performance from the Rinaldo Franci Conservatory of Siena. She is the founder and promoter of the Women@DIISM association (women.diism.unisi.it) and the representative and seminar chair of the Unisi-IA network (https://sites.google.com/unisi.it/unisi-ia). She has served as chair and general chair of numerous international conferences and workshops (General Chair, Conference on Complex Systems 2025 https://ccs25.cssociety.org/, General Chair of workshops at IJCNN 2025 and ECML-PKDD 2023).
