Presentation

My scientific research has primarily centered on plant reproductive biology, particularly the developmental process of pollen. Initially, my work was devoted to the cell biology of pollen, using it as a model to analyze various cellular processes. As time progressed, I broadened my scope from analyzing pollen to studying entire plants. Nonetheless, my core interest has consistently been the cellular and molecular mechanisms governing plant cell functions, adopting a comprehensive approach encompassing cell-cell and cell-environment interactions. A significant aspect of my research is the investigation of plant responses to environmental changes, a subject of current significance. I examine this interaction at multiple levels using diverse methodologies, which has enhanced my technical expertise in plant biology, ranging from microscopy to physiological, metabolic, and genetic analyses. This interdisciplinary approach has expanded my comprehension of plant processes, and I aspire to have made a meaningful contribution to scientific research in this domain. More recently, my focus has included the study of genes and proteins that affect plant responses to environmental stress and the investigation of plant metabolic diversity, examining various species and cultivars to discern how specific traits influence plant adaptation to their surroundings. Pollen continues to be a pivotal element of my research, as demonstrated by recent projects investigating self-incompatibility under environmental stress, pollen development in gravity-influenced settings, and the creation of artificial pollination techniques.

Research

In recent years, I have received funding for the following research topics:

  1. Analysis of olive processing effluents on cultivated plants (Modolivi Project, Tuscany Region)
  2. Nutraceutical aspects of locally adapted plants (Toscolata project, Tuscany Region)
  3. Use of native plants in the local agricultural production chain (Basiq project, Region of Tuscany)
  4. Analysis of different wheat cultivation methods (Innovacereali project, Tuscany Region)
  5. Study of incompatibility in fruit trees (ISIDE project, Prin 2015)
  6. Innovative fertilization methods for olive trees (Olimpolli project, Tuscany Region)
  7. Analysis of innovative flour products from ancient cereals (Drago project, Region of Tuscany)
  8. Analysis of the presence of Brettanomyces in the wine supply chain (NoBrett project, Tuscany Region)
  9. Analysis of heat stress on citrus propagation (Prin 2022)
  10. Development of mechanized pollination systems for olive trees (Farming Future)
