Guido Sebastiani (Ph.D.) is a molecular biologist and Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Siena (Department of Medicine, Surgery and Neuroscience), Siena - Italy, where he earned its Ph.D. in 2011. Prof. Sebastiani is a leading expert in the molecular mechanisms of human metabolic diseases, with a particular focus on type 1 and type 2 diabetes. His research emphasizes the role of non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs, as circulating biomarkers and intracellular mediators of type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) and related conditions. He has authored 70 peer-reviewed articles and holds an h-index of 32, reflecting his substantial contributions to the field.
Prof. Sebastiani’s work integrates multiomics approaches, including RNA and small RNAs high-throughput sequencing, exosome characterization, and in vitro cellular studies of microRNAs function. His groundbreaking discoveries include identifying circulating microRNAs as biomarkers in diabetes and elucidating the mechanisms of beta-cell dysfunction and immune-mediated pathogenesis of T1D.
He has been honored with prestigious awards such as the Rising Stars Symposium invitation (Immunology of Diabetes Society, 2024) and the JDRF nPOD Young Investigator Award (2019). Prof. Sebastiani collaborates with leading experts in small RNAs biology across Europe and with multiple international research teams and serves on the scientific committees of esteemed organizations such as the Italian Society of Diabetology(SID).
